ISLAMABAD: Emerging squash player Nasir Iqbal with his perseverance and game skill defeated an experienced Yasir Butt in the ninth Chief of Army Staff International squash championship at the Mushaf Squash Complex on Saturday.
“It was my day. I was very confident and played as per my plan,” the youngster from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa told journalists after winning his second major national title.
Nasir, 17, who also got an advantage of missing top squash players –Aamir Atlas Khan and Farhan Mehboob “is now swiftly sailing in the national squash circuit.”
Farhan made an early exit from the COAS International squash tournament mainly because he was supposed to participate in an international event while Aamir Atlas Khan is facing six months ban from the Pakistan Squash Federation.
“I am hopeful of performing the same in upcoming national events and if given a chance in international circuit, I will do my best,” said Nasir, who is currently ranked 149 in Professional Squash Association’s global ranking.
Nasir lifted the championship with a 3-1 win against Yasir Butt who lost from the youngster mainly because of stamina.
Nasir despite losing the first game 5-11 made a better comeback in the second, winning it 11-7.
He also won the last two games 11-4, 11-8, sending Yasir out of the court within 41 minutes.
