KARACHI: Punjab`s Mohammad Shahid `s dream to become Pakistan No 1 became a reality when he climbed to top of the ladder in the latest national rankings released by the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) on Tuesday.
The rankings are based on the results of cueists in the 36th NJI which concluded in the city last month.Shahid, a native of Faisalabad, who entered the country`s premier snooker championship as a qualifier, surprised fraternity of the game routing province-mate Imran Shahzad 8-2 in the final to take a big leap in the national rankings.
Imran, who was on top prior to national event, was pushed to second position while Asian No 2 Mohammad Sajjad, who was lying at fourth spot, bettered his rank occupying third place. All the top three belonged to Punjab.The next three positions are held by Sindh, thanks to Sultan Mohammad, Sohail Shahzad and qualifier Naveen Perwani.
Previously ranked 14th, Sultan leapt 10 places to secure fourth slot while Sohail slipped from second to fifth. Former national champion Perwani, who made his exit in the quarter-final, has occupied sixth place and by finishing among the top eight become entitled for monthly remuneration until the next ranking event.
Mohammad Asif Toba and Mohammad Asif, both from Punjab, have attained seventh and eighth places respectively.But veteran Mohammad Yousuf, a former world amateur champion, who entered the contest as a qualifier, heralded revival by finishing 10th which also makes him eligible for the second ranking event of PBSA calendar.

1-Mohammad Shahid (Punjab), 2-Imran Shahzad (Punjab), 3-Mohammad Sajjad (Punjab), 4-Sultan Mohammad (Sindh), 5-Sohail Shahzad (Sindh), 6-Naveen Perwani (Sindh), 7-Mohammad Asif Toba (Punjab), 8-Mohammad Asif (Punjab).
